At the initiative of Helen Mandroux, Mayor of Montpellier, a big appeal of mayors in favor of opening marriage to gay couples has been launched.
Peter Cohen has chosen to engage in signing this call alongside Bertrand Delanoe and including many other mayors in France.
Ten years ago gave birth to the civil pact of solidarity, voted and carried by the Left. Today the success of PACS continues unabated, it is increasingly popular with the French. This first step towards equal rights for all couples has led to greater visibility and acceptance of diversity of couples.
Our community has from the beginning of his term, wanted to show its determination to work towards equality for all.
The creation of the position of Deputy Mayor for diversity, with skills, and a budget to fight against all forms of discrimination is a strong symbol of our willingness to act in this area.
We also introduced the celebration of PACS in the wedding hall, town hall, in our common home. By this symbolic act we wanted to show that there is no distinction between couples.
However more than 70 countries still condemn homosexuality and the punishing of a dozen dead. France must now more than ever to conduct a policy of opening up minds. Discrimination in marriage shall cease to exist in our country and be allowed access to homosexual couples.
The group elected socialist, radical and therefore fully support the Republican initiative the mayor of Toulouse and also to undertake an open marriage to gay couples.
We will continue to fight for that one day we can all be witness to a marriage between two men or two women at the Capitol!
